The UK’s largest producer of farmed trout, who employ 27 people in Taynuilt and the surrounding area, have submitted a planning application to upgrade one of their existing sites on Loch Etive.
Dawnfresh Farming has today submitted a planning application to Argyll & Bute Council to increase the number of pens permitted at their Airds Point site on Loch Etive from 10 to 12 without increasing the current biomass permitted by SEPA.
The revised application also allows for an upgrade to the cages themselves as well as installing new feeding equipment on each pen.
In its response to the company’s request for a screening opinion, Argyll & Bute Council planning officers concluded that the planned upgrade “is not likely to have significant effects on the environment”. As a result, Dawnfresh have proceeded to submit a full planning application.
Dawnfresh Farming, who sponsor the Taynuilt Highland Games, Taynuilt Shinty Club, Etive Vikings junior rugby team, as well as supporting a number of local community group, believe the upgrade will allow the site to be equipped with the highest quality cages and feeding equipment, improving efficiency and production and safeguarding jobs for years to come.
As stated in the full planning application, the surface area of the Airds Point site will increase slightly and each pen will be equipped with the latest Batten Feeders. Betten feeders allow the efficiencies of automated feeding to be achieved without the requirement to install a feed barge. The application will also allow the site to fully utilise the biomass permitted by SEPA of 1,545tonnes, a small increase from the current practical site capacity of 1,300 tonnes.
Stocking density, production cycles, fallow periods and other permissions will remain the same, were the application to be permitted, so local people should not expect to notice any practical change to the operations on the loch.
Alison Hutchins, Farming Director for Dawnfresh, said: “Dawnfresh are very much a part of the local community, employing a significant number of people in the area and supporting local events and activities.”
“The upgrading of our Airds Point site on Loch Etive will allow us to deploy the latest equipment and nets, with the proposed increase in the number of pens allowing us increased flexibility to protect our fish while keeping environmental impact to a minimum.”
“We have had a number of conversations with local people over a number of years and believe this application takes in to account concerns expressed regarding the location of the two additional pens and also the feeding options for the site. The application has been revised in response to these concerns.”
“We are delighted that Argyll & Bute Council have concluded that these changes are not likely to have significant effects on the environment but as always, we are keen to hear from local people, to answer their questions and provide them with any information we can about our operations on Loch Etive.”
